Ozone for Mold Remediation - Why Not To Use
As technology continues to develop, the use of alternative forms of mold remediation are starting to become more prevalent in the mold cleanup and removal business. However not all forms of mold treatment are created equal. Today we will talk about treatments such as Gas Ozone Based Biocides and their effectiveness.
When you have a mold problem in a building it’s imperative to ensure that your mold remediation company is properly treating the mold contamination with effective measures. A few such measures that are becoming more widely used in this industry are ozone treatments. It’s important to know however, that according to the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH), “No gas- or vapor- phase biocides can effectively and safely remediate a mold contaminated building because of problems with biocide delivery, efficacy and toxicity.” Many different studies have proved that the amount of gas generated by an ozone generator is not concentrated enough to even keep mold from growing on surfaces and that ozone can increase sub-particles and react poorly with many products as it is a very strong oxidizing agent and tends to be unstable.
So be aware that mold and other fungal growth problems can usually only be properly remediated with chemical biocides and antimicrobials. If your mold remediation company is using a different method other than chemical, ask them to consult the newly written R520, which is a universal standard for mold remediation procedures and protocols.
Ozone has some uses when it comes to odor removal but is not a stand along defense for remediation.
